Who will receive the Alberta Income Support?

The Albertans who meet the following eligibility requirements can claim and receive the Albertan Income Support:

Age and Residency Criteria 

  •  You must reside in Alberta and must have attained at least 18 years of age;
  • You have Canadian citizenship/ refugee/ permanent resident/ refugee claimants;

Financial Criteria:

  • You do not have any income or assets that exceed $5000 in RRSPs per adult, and $10,000 in equity for vehicles, 
  • You are unable to meet your and your family’s basic needs and you have no income that exceeds what you receive from the Income support benefits;
  • You do not have the assets or cash that goes above the limit, that is, three times the income support you are qualified to receive, 
  • You qualify for the other income support programs, such as Employment Insurance.

Condition to work:

  • You are either looking for a job or working but not earning enough to meet your basic needs,
  • You can’t work or need training or develop a skill to look for a decent job that helps you pay your bills,
  • You can’t work or your ability to work is limited due to some serious health condition or other concerns,

You must have the will to plan and provide personal information of all the household members to the authority to develop the income support plan for you and improve your livelihood.

How much will you receive through Alberta Income Support in 2025?

The financial assistance under the Alberta Income Support depends on your situation and your requirements that will improve your situation. When you qualify for Income Support, the authority will look into your basic expenses based on the family size and other benefits.

Based on the Alberta Income Support and your basic needs, family size, and ability to work, you may qualify for the following benefits:

  • Childcare
  • Work-related expenses
  • Special diets
  • Costs to leave family violence
  • Utility costs
  • Unexpected emergencies, such as medical emergency
  • Children’s Education costs, such as school expenses,

How to claim Alberta Income Support?

Albertans who wish to apply for Alberta Income support to receive support from next year can apply for the income support, but first, they should prepare the following documents:

  • 2 months Bank statements to the date of application;
  • Direct deposit information
  • Identification proof of every household member;
  • Medical reports if you cannot work due to some serious health condition;

When you prepare the above documents, you can apply for Income Support online on the official website https://www.alberta.ca/.

If you need assistance in applying for the Income support you can call Alberta Supports at 1 877 644 9992 between office hours from Monday to Friday. If you cannot apply online, you can contact the Alberta Support Center and make an appointment for in-person services to complete the Alberta Income Support application. 

The Income support application can take up to 2 weeks for the authority to review and process your request and plan your income support plan. 

What changes should you report to continue receiving the Alberta Income Support?

The Albertans who qualify for Income support and start receiving the benefits should report the following changes to receive income support that meets their basic needs and avoid overpayment which could create problems for the recipients. Here are the changes that you should immediately report to the case worker to receive accurate and timely Income support:

  • Medical condition changed from worse to better,
  • Employment status
  • Number of children or dependents
  • Ability to work or join any training program 
  • Children are no longer dependent
  • Income and change in assets
  • Address, mobile number, or any other change in contact information, 
  • When you moved out of Alberta permanently.
  • Living in a hospital care home, etc.

  1. Why is it before they changed the benefits to the first of each month we used to get two cheques in December. Now the changed it to the first to cut that extra cheque we used to get in December . Now it’s back to the old way and no extra cheque in December. 45 days till next cheque. That’s too long to wait for so little money . That extrac cheque helped a lot.
